エシカルストーリー
琵琶パールは、日本の滋賀県・びわ湖で育まれる淡水真珠。その母貝であるイケチョウ貝は、淡水に生息する二枚貝で、内側に美しい光沢を持ち、珠となる真珠を生み出します。
このイケチョウ貝は水質や環境の変化に非常に敏感で、かつてびわ湖の環境悪化によって数を大きく減らしてしまいました。しかし、今、多くの人たちの努力により、再びその命が育まれようとしています。
私たちが目指すのは、「本物のローカル」を生産者さんとともに創り出すこと。長年にわたり琵琶パールの復活に尽力されている生産者・齋木さんのような方々と寄り添いながら、小さな一歩を積み重ねていくことです。
まずは、行き場を失った貝殻を買い取り、アップサイクルする取り組みから。わずかな買い取りですが、それが漁場の環境整備に役立てられています。こうした地道な活動が積み重なり、いつか琵琶湖の自然が豊かさを取り戻し、琵琶パールが再び輝きを放つことを私たちは心から願っています。
Ethical Story
Biwa Pearls are freshwater pearls cultivated in Lake Biwa, located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. They are formed within the Hyriopsis schlegelii mussel, a bivalve that thrives in freshwater environments and produces pearls with a beautiful natural luster.
These mussels are highly sensitive to changes in water quality and environmental conditions. Due to the environmental degradation of Lake Biwa, their population once declined sharply. Today, however, efforts by many individuals are driving a hopeful revival.
What we aim to do may seem small—but it’s meaningful. Our mission is to work hand in hand with local producers and help create a truly authentic local industry. We especially hope to support Mr. Saiki, a dedicated producer who has spent years working to restore Biwa Pearl cultivation.
